Rethinking Cities: Energy and Traffic

Nation (September 25, 2009) — Oliver Munday, GOOD Magazine

Energy companies in Denmark conglomerated in 2006 to form DONG, the largest energy company in Denmark. DONG, in collaboration with IBM, has recently installed remote sensors, which make up an intelligent utility network aimed at enhancing network planning. The program is expected to offer 80 percent of grid reinforcement savings.

In Singapore, new technologies have been used in the last two decades to enhance the Intelligent Transport Systems Center, which monitors traffic flow. The system utilizes cameras to locate congested roads and accident sites, allowing a faster response time. Singapore is currently developing a pilot tool with IBM that will predict traffic conditions in advance. The tool is expected to operate with accuracy rates exceeding 85 percent.
