New study shows $56 Billion in hidden health damage from autos
nation (October 20, 2009) — Elana Schor, Streetsblog NYC
According to the National Research Council (NRC), cars and trucks have "about $56 billion in hidden health costs that are not reflected in the price of oil or electricity." This amount accounts for 1.2-1.7 cents per vehicle mile traveled. This report was to help map the health impacts of various energy sources and did not factor in climate change.
Despite efforts to reduce the consumption of natural resources, hybrids and electric vehicles, although a step in the right direction, still consume large amounts of coal. Transportation reform is also electricity and energy reform.
