Don't sacrifice public health for development
Thailand's economic development goal appears to have collided with the well-being of hundreds of thousands of residents at Map Ta Phut and other industrial districts in Rayong province.
Thailand (October 3, 2009) — Nophakhun Limsamarnphun, The Nation
Because of their adverse affect on the public health of province residents, a court order required 76 industrial projects to suspend operations, costing over $330B in lost economic opportunities. This evidence comes from health impact assessments and other studies done in the area. However, the public interaction with decision-making through these types of assessments has risen to the forefront of policies and decisions, given the lack of attention previously given to the matter and the adverse health effects on residents of the area due to these economic developments.
