Smart Growth must not ignore Drivers
nation (September 14, 2009) — Joel Kotkin, New Geography
Despite being a focus of the Obama administration, major transportation spending initiatives have been put on hold, due to concerns over the deficit and the state of the economy. This comes as proposals to cut federal gas taxes going to roads are being sent to subsidize transit and as high-speed-rail becomes a focus on transport spending. With these types of policies, the "typical" American lifestyle focused on automobile transit would be changed. However, it will be difficult for these types of policies to pass, given the general lack of support in transit and dense urban environments, except by those already living in Washington DC, New York, etc. In order for these policies to seem favorable, the administration needs to address the needs of suburban, small-city, and rural residents as well as big-city denizens.
