Megaregions: Planning for Global Competitiveness (July 2009)

Megaregions: Planning for Global Competitiveness (July 2009)

Edited By: Catherine L. Ross, Ph.D.

This book is an edited volume of the work of a select group of scholars and theoreticians that contributes to the development of the theoretical underpinnings of spatial planning in an American context. The volume addresses the most critical issues confronting us over the next 50 years of American growth, development, and global competition. The authors examine particular ways in which spatial planning may be useful in addressing equity, environmental, and economic concerns. The rising significance of the region and city-regions in the global economy, and the challenges currently confronting American cities and regions, clearly signal the timeliness of this book.

The Inner City: Urban Poverty and Economic Development in the Next Century (January 1997)

Growth Management and Florida

Edited By: Thomas Boston, Ph.D. and Catherine L. Ross, Ph.D.

The Inner City surveys the issues of urban poverty and economic development in the 21st century. The Inner City includes not only the viewpoints of academicians, but also those of practitioners. All take up the argument by Michael Porter that a sustainable economic base can be created in the inner city only if it has been created elsewhere first, through private, for-profit, initiatives and investment based on economic self-interest and genuine competitive advantage, not through artificial inducements, charity, or government. Five community service organizations (whose primary focus is the inner city) present perspectives on their organizations' strategies for inner city revitalization. Each brings a unique approach to problems of the inner city. Following the impassioned arguments are two responses from the co-editors, and one from Michael Porter himself.
