BELTLINE HIA
What is the BeltLine?
The proposed Atlanta BeltLine is a 22-mile loop of rail that will be converted to a transit system and park system that encircles the core of Atlanta. This rail and trail project has the potential to direct development in Atlanta for decades to come. Recently, the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA) released a draft "BeltLine Redevelopment Plan" which laid the groundwork for an initial vision of what the BeltLine will become. Here are some brief statistics of what the BeltLine will look like 25 years from now:
- Improvements to 700 acres of existing parks
- 1,300 acres of new greenspace/parks
- 33 miles of trails connecting 40 parks
- 30,000 new jobs
- 5,600 housing units for lower-income individuals and families
- Access to 3,000 acres of underutilized property for development
Clearly, the BeltLine will be a significant fixture in the future of Atlanta. However, with the possibility of such extensive development, it is crucial that the BeltLine is designed and implemented in a way that is most beneficial to Atlanta. The BeltLine HIA aims to make health concerns a primary factor in decision making for the BeltLine project.
